How to read this list

A preferred stock pays a fixed dividend on a fixed par value, usually $25 a share, and trades on an exchange like a stock. The coupon is the dividend as a percent of par. The current yield is the same dividend as a percent of today’s price, so it rises as the price falls and falls as the price rises.

The call date is the first day the issuer may buy the shares back at par. Before it, the holder is owed the dividend; after it, the issuer may end the security on any payment date. “vs par” is where the price sits against $25. Above par, a call returns less than the price paid, so the yield to call on the record is the one to read. Below par, a call pays more than the price, and the current yield understates the return.

“Pays” is how often the dividend arrives. The score is the Income Quality Score, a 0-to-10 reading of how well the payment is supported, explained on the methodology page. It describes; it does not rank.

A few rows, read the way a member reads them

  • SOMN (The Southern Company) trades at $48.26, 93.0% above par. A call at par would return less than the price paid today, so the yield to read is the yield to call on its record, not the 7.38% current yield.
  • T-C (AT&T Inc) trades at $15.60, 37.6% below par. Its 4.75% coupon works out to 7.61% at that price, and a call would pay par, above the price.
  • C-N (Citigroup Capital XIII) is past its first call date. The issuer may redeem it at par on any payment date it chooses, so the 10.14% current yield lasts only as long as the issuer leaves it outstanding.

What the list leaves out

Yield to call, yield to worst, whether the dividend is cumulative, the credit quality and the fixed-to-floating terms are on each record. The full 750+ issues, with filters by coupon, call date, sector and rating, saved screens and the alerts, open with an account: the first 10 rows of each screener on Starter, every row on Plus.

The score describes income quality on a 0-to-10 scale and ranks nothing. Credit quality shows Investment grade, High yield or Not rated. Sources: SEC EDGAR, licensed market data, FRED. Nothing on this page is investment advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold.
